Sonali Matthews is one of the companions to the 2009 American Girl Girl of the Year, Chrissa Maxwell. Sonali was originally part of the Queen Bees, who were cruel in the beginning of the stories to Gwen Thompson and Chrissa. Later, Sonali leaves the Queen Bees and becomes friends with Gwen and Chrissa. Sonali is smart and is a swimmer like her friends. Sonali has black, waist-length, wavy hair and dark brown eyes. She is originally dressed in a lime green shirt, aqua tunic, denim pants, and blue flats, all from American Girl. Sonali is part of Chrissa’s collection and is featured in her books. The book Friends comes along with Sonali.

Gwen Thompson is one of the American Girl companions to the 2009 American Girl Doll of the Year, Chrissa Maxwell. Gwen is a shy girl, was bullied by mean girls in her class, and was friendless until Chrissa befriended her. Gwen and her mother had been homeless, before living at a place called Sunrise House that helped them get back on their feet. Gwen likes to swim and is a skilled violinist. Gwen has blond hair and brown eyes, and her original outfit consists of a white sundress and pink sandals. Gwen has a major role in Chrissa’s two books, and is considered to be a part of Chrissa’s collection. However, Gwen did come with a copy of the book Friends.

The American Girl Chrissa Doll for 2009 was Chrissa Maxwell, nicknamed Chrissy. Chrissa lives with her family, but moves to Minnesota to live with her grandmother following the death of her grandfather. Chrissa’s grandmother raises mini-llamas, and Chrissa is very creative and can knit and sew. Chrissa loves to swim and dive, and tries very hard to be friendly. Chrissa has brown hair and light blue eyes, and comes dressed in a pink dress, purple flats, and a bracelet. Chrissa’s other outfits include  her Warm-Up Set, her Swim Team Gear, her Snow Outfit, and her Sundress, all from American Girl. Chrissa’s accessories include her Pet Llama, her Craft Studio, her Party Table, and her Snow Gear. Chrissa is the first American Girl Doll of the Year to have companion dolls, who were from her book: Gwen Thompson and Sonali Matthews. Nicki lives on a ranch and is very close with her family, and likes skiing. Nicki has curly, light brown hair and blue eyes. Nicki’s original outfit consists of a blue skirt, cream top, and cowgirl boots, all from American Girl. Nicki’s collection includes her Ranch Outfit, Ski Wear, Tie Top and Shorts, and Gala Outfit. Nicki’s accessories are Sprocket, her dog-in-training, Jackson the Horse, and her Ski Gear, among others.  Nicki was the first Girl of the Year to have two American Girl books, both of which tell her story of living on a ranch.
